Short Mat Bowls in Oxfordshire started in earest when the Wantage and District League was formed in 1985 with five teams and thirty-six members.

The original teams all came from three clubs, two each from Challow British Legion and Didcot Conservative Club with one from the Harwell Police Club.

In 1986 they commenced playing in Inter-County Championship (I.C.C.) matches.

By 1989 the number of Clubs and Players had increased and talks started to form the Oxfordshire County Short Mat Bowling Association and the county was formed in December 1991. Today in the Winter League there are some 28 affiliated Club, comprising 41 teams, and about 532 players.

The County now also enters two teams in the Winter League of the Inter-County Championship (I.C.C.).

The Wantage and District League is still operational and runs the
Summer League
It also conducts its own Competitions in tandem with the Oxfordshire County Short Mat Competitions during the winter months.
